If there’s one thing all students absolutely despise, it’s test taking. Let’s be honest here. It doesn’t matter if a student is at the top of the class or at the bottom–they will dislike the idea of being tested over the knowledge they have obtained from a particular unit, chapter, or class. From those who get incredibly anxious during a test all the way to those who can breeze through it, here are some of the recommended dos and don’ts of test taking. Keep in mind that every individual has their own methods of preparing for that big exam.
Do study a week in advance. If you want to exceed exponentially on every test you take, this could be undoubtedly the single most important piece of advice you can take. Implement it within your study habits and not only will you perform better, but you will also decrease stress levels at the same time. If you know the material pretty well, there should be nothing to worry about!
Don’t procrastinate. This piece of advice not only goes for studying for the test, but also for completing year round activities, assignments, and homework for the class. This is especially productive when looked at in a long-term perspective. If you don’t procrastinate on assignments and give it your all, this can significantly improve the retention of material for the test. Be a proactive student!
Do sleep the night before. Perhaps this may be a difficult concept to grasp. The cramming culture is so prevalent in today’s society that we hardly notice the benefits of sleeping. An article by the New York Times states that “REM is exceptionally good for deciphering hidden patterns, comprehension, and seeing a solution to a hard problem.” Essentially, a strong REM cycle will aid you during the test. Check out this TP article on more information on what else to do the night before!
Don’t be intimidated by distractions. It is important not to get psyched out when studying for a test. For example, if you have a lot on your plate that week, organize yourself. Use a calendar. Being organized and seeing what you have in store for that month may improve the way you study and how much you study.
Do come prepared to class. Believe it or not, asking multiple people for a pencil before the test begins can ruin the concentration you may have potentially had while taking the test. It is probably in your best interest to come to class with all required materials in order to be one hundred percent prepared in terms of being ready on test day.
Don’t try a new study tactic for a difficult test. To put it in simple terms, if you study more efficiently in a quiet environment with the utmost concentration, don’t attempt to study for a major test in a coffee shop with consistent noise all around you. Don’t get me wrong–it is important to experiment and discover the best possible way to study, but don’t do it at the wrong time.
Do go over your weaknesses. When studying for the test, make sure to practice efficient time management. For example, don’t dwell too much time on a certain topic you’ve got covered. Make sure to face the challenges head on. Do numerous practice problems on those concepts that you don’t have a strong foundation on. This will definitely play a major role in the outcome of how well you do on the test.
Don’t believe that each of these dos and don’ts on the list has power on its own. A student must intertwine each of these together. The strategy is implementing these habits as a whole rather than individually. Once that concept has been grasped, the foundation of success has been built.
A majority of these dos and don’ts may or may not go over your head. It is completely up to the you–the wonderful, awesome student–to efficiently manage your own time. Tests are something we are supposed to ace. With the correct mentality, amount of resources, and ideals, the outcomes will be glorious. All you have to do is study.
